How to Plan a Practical Shower

How to Plan a Practical Shower
So you’re renovating your bathroom and you want to include a shower. It might be a very minimal corner shower or you might have planned a magnificent shower for two. Either way it will have to be a very practical space that works for you. Here’s how.

Storage
Some like the built in shampoo niche while others will prefer a more traditional soap basket. Make sure you think of what you usually use while showering for a realistic set up.

Bench
You might want to have a full bench or simply a narrow ledge just to rest your foot when shaving or hey maybe you’re applying nail polish - who said the water was on? This option might be a simpler addition to your shower than you might think.

Shower Controls
Your shower control don’t need to be bellow the actual shower. Have you mastered that technique where you’re super quick at turning it on so you don’t get the first hit of cold water? Fear no more! Locate the controls near the entrance of the shower, turn it on, wait 5 seconds and you’re good to go. You’re welcome.

Hand Shower
Wether you’re all about the body jets or looking for the biggest rain shower you can get, make sure you don’t forget a hand shower. You can get one on a bar and use it in the same way you would a shower head or have it on a hook which gives a nice low profile look. A hand shower has more pressure than a rain shower so it’s totally practical for those with thick or long hair. Not to mention you will enjoy having it handy for rinsing or washing your shower.

Lighting
Don’t forget lighting in your shower! It’ super important. I like to have the shower lighting on a  separate light switch than the rest of the general lighting and bonus- on a dimmer. Easier to start the morning this way and can also be used as a nightlight. Win!

Shower Glass
Some call it clarvista, others microtek, there are other terms used as well but basically it’s protection for your glass, usually backed by a guarantee and installed by the manufacturer, which helps keep it clean. All you have to do it squeegee after your shower and it stays really nice. Obviously regular upkeep can’t be disregarded but this allows you to enjoy clear glass on your day to day. Don’t use vim or any other abrasive products as this will wear it away quickly.

How to Style your Bathroom Like a 5 Star Luxury Hotel

How to Style your Bathroom Like a 5 Star Luxury Hotel
Isn’t it nice to get away? I love taking tips from the places I stay when traveling to use them in my own home or design projects. Sometimes you’re just missing that extra detail that will make your bathroom feel ultra high end and inviting.

Robe Hook
This is such an easy add on. You for sure have room for one no matter the size of bathroom and you will avoid having your bath robe laying around all the time. Honestly every time I stay in a  hotel room where there is a nice fluffy robe hanging I get excited to wear it. I never do. But just the thought of it makes me feel comfortable!

Display Products
Have a few pretty soaps, perfumes or lotions out for show. Group them together on a fancy tray or on a  stack of hand towels. This would be a great place to add a room diffuser of your signature scent. I like to purchase products I enjoyed from hotel boutiques I’ve stayed at and use them in my home. Not only do they look fancy but they remind me of good times from that specific trip.

Art
Hang framed photographs, postcards or prints to dress up the space and make it personal. For fun art prints I like to check out Society 6. Careful though, you could totally spend hours on there!

Storage
For toilet paper. Don’t forget to keep extras handy in the room. Make them visible if you're renovating your guest bathroom or powder room. You could also opt for a double toilet paper holder. Like this one from Kohler.

Towels
Please keep them white. Towels are not a way to add a ‘’splash of color’’. It’s tacky. White towels will always look right and compliment the room without stealing the show.

Not ready for the details yet and need help renovating your bathroom first? I can help you choose the right materials, fixtures and floorpan for a high end feel! Contact me here -I’d love to hear about your project.

What You Need for a Warm and Comfortable Bathroom

5 ways to create a warm & comfortable bathroom
Think of how you want to feel in your new bathroom. Ok now think of when you’re stepping out of the shower or getting out of bed to go to the washroom. Making your bathroom pretty is really fun but you also should think of what you need to really appreciate your space on a daily basis. Here are 5 key elements I like to work with to help bring up the heat.

A Towel Warmer
Try and leave space near your shower or bath for one. Unless you’ve mastered the ‘’hubby throws you a towel from the dryer’’ technique, a towel warmer will definitely come in handy. I like to check out ICO which is a Canadian make and very good quality, especially their Tuzio line which can also help heat the space.

Heated Floors
Tiles can get very cold and frankly, I even keep my heated floors on in the summer. It’s just not as harsh especially when waking up! Crank the heat up in the winter and if calculated correctly, a heated floor can be used as a main and even only source of heating for a bathroom. It’s uniform and avoids any visible heating units! (Yayy!) My go-to system is Ditra-Heat by Schluter.

Shower Glass
I know I love the simple look of a single glass panel too- just enough to contain the shower. But really, if you are a chilly person, you might want to stick to a fully closed shower. I don’t mean all the way up to the ceiling but go with a standard door on hinges or sliding door. This will keep more humidity in and keep you warm.

Shower Fixtures
If you share your shower with your loverlove (#reallife) you might want to consider having the ability to use two shower fixtures at once. For example a rain shower and hand shower, or shower head and body jets. Nothing is worst than waiting for your turn -in the cold.

A Wall Heater
If you do need an extra boost of heat, try a forced-air heater. Most of them have timers or can be programmed to accommodate your schedule. Stelpro is a good place to look. They are local, made in Quebec, offer a wide range of finishes and can even do custom colors if needed! SO great. You don’t have to limit yourself to a white unit that might stick out too much and distract from the rest of your decor.

You don’t need to have all of these but evaluating all of them is a good idea. What would you appreciate most?

Make sure you don't miss out on great options. As an interior designer, I love to personalize every project. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
